What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is an accumulation of protein rich fluid in your arm or leg following lymph node removal, radiation therapy, or trauma.
What am I looking for as a sign of Lymphedema?
Initially, lymphedema begins very slowly with a small amount of swelling in the extremity. Typically, there is slight skin tenderness at the swollen area.
If you have been suffering from lymphedema for any length of time there is a possibility you have experienced skin changes. These changes may include; skin that feels stretched, appears shiny, or has a thick feeling.
It is important that at the first sign of lymphedema you seek the help of licensed medical professionals who have obtained a full Certification in Lymphedema Management from an accredited school.
CAUTION: there are many individuals who state they are "lymphedema specialists" but have not completed adequate course work for competent evaluation, treatment, and support equipment recommendations. We advise all patients to "Do your homework and ask for Credentials."
Certified Lymphedema Therapists must have the following credentials:
1. A professional license such as an RN, OT, PT, OTA, PTA, MD, DO, DP, NP, and
2. A full certification in Manual lymphatic drainage therapy with at least 135 hours of training, and
3. A Lymphology Association of North America ( LANA) certificate indicating they passed the board examination.
Will my insurance cover the cost of the garment or associated equipment?
Coverage is different for every patient. Some insurance companies cover the expenses and others do not. When you visit a provider for your equipment, the provider will verify your coverage for you.
